From the looks of the reviews below you would think this pub is the worst pub in the world! In actual fact it is not at all bad. I recently moved to Edinburgh and have found that it is an enjoyable bar.
The coffee shop is great to sit in and watch the world go by, all be it it does get a little busy. The main Bar has a great atmosphere on a Friday and Saturday night and I have often taken friends that have visited to the Cellat Bar down satirs where we have enjoyed a lovely meal in one of their alcoves. I think there is something for everyone in this bar. Don't be put off by the reviews, try it for yourself.

On a tight schedule before a meeting we had a half an hour for lunch so ordered a single plate of nachos to share.
After 20 minutes the coffee cups were emptied but no sign of food. On asking I was told it would be right there but after 5 more mins we abandoned ship and as we were paying (mug!) I noticed the food order with the comment "please hurry I forgot to order this"
No apology or attempt at correction. Avoid this place like the plague if you expect anything other than appalling service

Will never visit Ryan's Bar again and neither should you. Every time I have gone past, it always looks busy so when we were looking for a place to lunch, we thought we couldn't go wrong...
We had to ask 3 times for service, when we did get it, the server never wrote the order down leading to 1 wrong meal being delivered. When the right one did come, it was inedible.
A forced apology came with 1 meal being taken from the bill.

Sunday 5th Aug, sat for 10 mins and was ignored by the po-faced waiting staff while all around me got served. Eventually got my order in but the staff were utterly miserable and pretty useless, food was nice but I wont be back.

I used to frequent this place in my student days, and looking back on it, I now know where my student grant went! I was in the other week just for a coffe, and sat and watched the world go by for half an hour. Would I go out of my way for food or beer here. Nope.

Went here with a group of friends for breakfast/lunch. None of us thought that any part of this establishment deserved pass marks and none of us will be going back thats for sure - id advise you all to do the same.

i along with a large group of friends went to ryan's bar at the end of jan 07 on a sunday afternoon, i want to take this opportunity to tell you not to consider this bar indeed to tell you to avoid it at all costs.
The staff were the most dour faced ive had the mispleasure of being served by, the bacon was served with large amounts of lard on it and arrived cold to boot. Out of the large group of friends that were there there wasn't one of us that would give ryans bar anywhere near pass marks never mind recommend it.

Why is this place so popular ? £4 for a bottle of magners , incompetent staff although they did gave me change of a 20 for a tenner (extra mark for that).
The girls serving in nice white t-shirts are a plus but even with that most people want to down one drink and move on.
Its devoid of any atmosphere , nothing special and the door staff are neandrathals ...

Had been in a couple of times but like has been said its overpriced and the staff are poor. Well certainly not be back after getting knocked back at the door for having a maroon jersey on as it;s no football coulers while a group was clearly visible inside wearing hibs coulers and scarfs. Not impressed with the bouncers attitude when challenged

While there with friends I handed over £20 note for 4 drinks (cost 9.65)and received 35p change. After advising them of this they did not want to know about it and would not rectify my change. The manager was not very helpful and after a while said he would look into this in the morning as he could not close the till and balance it.
In the morning I phoned the manager to be told that the till was short and he could not refund me. So at one point in the night it was in profit and by the end of the night in deficit. I asked him how the loss would be accounted for and he didn't know, also he didn't know about balancing a till when a customer challenges change given.
The manangement are obviously not concerned about their customers.
I am writing this so that anyone else going there be CAREFUL when handing the barstaff money and make sure you get the correct change.
It would not be one pub I will be frequenting in the future

Very expensive but the staff were very friendly. The manager seemed very rude though. The food was good. The outside seating area is fantastic. Perfect for watching the world go by.

I understand that being in the line of work where you have to police troublemakers, may cause aggression levels to rise but the doormen here are bullys.I sat and watched one of them, a shaven headed bodybuilder, summon his mates to try and intimidate a small guy who had done nothing except be sick in the toilets, he was passive and tried to be friendly but this meathead dragged him out by the throat.I served in the French Foreign Legion for 18 years and was a close protection escort for top dignitaries yet I alway maintained my professional composure.This guy was filth, scum and the lowest of the cowardly low.He took liberties yet cowered away when more capable looking guys started to make a nuisance of themselves. This guy is a joke and should feel ashamed of himself, he has no heart and is pathetic.

Why is Kirsty not playing anymore on a Friday night? She was the only reason we paid the extortionate prices for drinks.
Friday nights not the same without her and why do you keep closing your downstairs bar??

I was in ryans last week while visiting family in edinburgh. A friend had recomended it to me and we had a great night. The food was good as was the service, although it was quite busy and we ended up staying till close. Well worth a visit!!

The only time I am in here is if I need a good West End location to meet up with someone. Then its one pint then off. Expensive and just doesn't match up to some of other bars nearby that offer a better experience. (Maybe I just catch it at the wrong times?)
