As a resident of Edinburgh for the last few years the Royal McGregor has become my local (well, not local exactly as I have to go out my way to get there but you know what I mean) watering hole. The staff are very friendly and helpful, although they can be understandably flustered when the pub is very busy, they pour an excellent pint of Belhaven Best (and there's a good range of other beers, ales, spirits and coffees if that's your thing), the food is traditional and generally very good, and the bar retains the atmosphere of a friendly, traditional local.

From the food menu I can particularly recommend the Cullen Skink and Battered Haddock whilst the noise and smell of the sizzling platters coming up from the kitchen for the Fajitas is always guaranteed to make my mouth water.

From the viewpoint of being a regular and longstanding customer of the Royal McGregor I would recomemnd this cosy and friendly little pub to anyone and indeed have often taken friends and family from outwith Edinburgh in for a drink or a bite to eat and they have all been full of praise for the pub.

Visited the Royal McGregor twice over the weekend, found the staff extremely helpful, food good and drink went down really well, can't understand how anybody found the staff unhelpful or unfriendly, as they could not have been more pleasant, even when we asked for a drink the barlady didn't know how to make up, she soon learned and was not put out by the fact that we told her what to put in it. we were there on Friday for a couple of hours and on Sunday for about hour and half when there was different staff on, and certainly were not asked to move tabkes when we order our drinks, they even gave us a discount card to enable us get 10% off our food and drink.

We went for lunch and ordered drinks. We asked to pay for drinks and were told unless we were eating we had to move seats. The place was quiet and initially we were forced to sit in a seat we didn't want to sit in. We were going to order food but the rudeness of the staff forced us to leave. We would never go back there again.

Decent little place. I had a very nice hot toddy and the staek pie was good. I would avoid the hamburgers (or, as my wife called them, horseburgers)

This is truly the worst place we have ever been, the sevice (or lack of it) was quite astounding.

The landlady was extremely rude and unwelcoming and as there are so many pleasant establishments to visit in Edinburgh we would advise giving this one a wide berth!

roadrunner, keep running! How dare you besmirch the name of this little gem! This pub has everything you need in a pub and then some. A great little haven in the eye of the storm, hearty food, always an interesting selection of good beers and of course whiskies. The staff are anything but unfriendly, and thoroughly professional. The place runs like clockwork
