Ok, so it's Rebus's bar, but that's what adds the charm to it, good to see that the locals were not put off by the tourists. Our visit added a delightful snapshot to the memory of the week up north.

This bar is the stuff of legends. From Willie Ross, John and now Harry (once reputed to be the rudest barman in Edinburgh)it has nothing but character in its fabric, staff and customers. Probably also the most dictionaries of any bar I have ever known and that is not because of the ignorance of the customers, rather the opposite. A must visit bar for anyone who apprecites the qualities of a traditional bar. Just don't go in a big group!

Folk used to come here in the hope of catching the legendary landlord Willie Ross insulting his clientele. We're going back 30 plus years. I'm glad it is pretty much the way it was then, but a bit brighter in the back and more welcoming to women.Willie Ross, on being asked once for a vodka said "Thiss Iss A PUB, we sell beer and whisky!" and that was that! I can't print some of the other things he said but he was some man.

now lets be honest, the only reason non locals go here is because Ian Rankin's Rebus drinks here !!! but i'm a non local and i always like to pop in. The locals are always ready with a smile. even if it's packed, they'll make room for you at the front bar (no mean feat considering how small it is !!)it's probably the most basic pub in Edinburgh, but it kind of adds to the charm... if you want a no nonsense bar out of the way, which serves Deuchars then this is the place for you !!!

The front bar is very intimidating, but the room in the back makes for a much better place to sink a few pints.
