I see that most of the comlaining comments are from the time the bar was called Twist and in different ownership. Now the new owner is so personally involved that all the old regulars - and I use the word 'old' in its widest sense so don't take offence anyone!! - have come back, and the staff are super efficient and friendly.
High standards are set.
I am a full time TG and I have no pressure when I drop in so I can relax with no odd looks or inane questions from staff or drinkers, and that I appreciate.
And if you ask him nicely, the DJ, Scotty, will find some music to suit all tastes - WON'T YOU SCOTTY!!!
So if yu haven't tried it laely, well worth a visit.

i went to the new town bar, first time in ages, what a difference, great staff, great customers, downstairs bar is fab, again good staff, great to hear some great music for a change, well done DJ spliffdog.

AT LAST. The Newtown Bar is back Fantastic service great atmosphere KIND!!! STAFF!!! but the only thing thats missing is the dj, where is dj malky....he was never rude.

Was in on the new owners/managers second weekend and what a turnaround. Actually recieved an apology from the bar staff for waiting about two minutes! Never noticed the wait as the atmosphere was fantastic and saw so many old faces who vowed never to darken "Twists" doorstep again. The place was packed and I had a fab time as did so many people. really asm so proud the Newtown has returned! Thanks guys.

It's amazing what can happen when the owner of a business listens to their customers. Seems like the new owners understand that the pub is there for the customers, not the staff. Gone are the nights where The New Town Bar was a warm-up for Alistair's weekend. Also gone are the hours of waiting for a pint because the staff didn't feel like serving you because they are too busy listening to Kylie.
Give it another try. I bet you'll like it.

Not been to this pub in a long time since it took a nosedive.
Amazing what happens with a new manager, new staff, and reverting back to the newtown name.
Fantastic atmosphere, really busy unlike before, freindly staff, a great night out, keep it up!!!
The newtown as we knew it is back, we missed it!

I've been drinking in the Newtownbar since 1992! I liked the 'old style' mans pub.
I visited Twist a few months back to find lesbian djs playing music that I'd never heard of, ignorant staff and a real shitty atmosphere. That coupled with aggressive door men and new clientelle that seemed more suited to CC Blooms.
I wont be back, neither will my mates. Avoid it like the plaque!

I am not sure who the other folks are on this board leaving messages but perhaps they were in the bar on a bad day / night?
I went in with some friends to see what the "new look" was like and I have to say I am impressed! A lot of money has been spent on this place unlike EVERY other gay bar in town which has not seen a coat of paint let alone a "make over". So full marks there! The food was fine - also a bonus in a gay bar as none of the others even bother. As for the staff, we actually found them helpful - the manager was chatty and located a gay map for one of our party who had not been to Edinburgh before.
Something tells me the person leaving such negative remarks on here may have been barred? As we all agreed it was a welcome change to the scene and we have been back many times since our first visit.
Like any other bar when there are only a couple of folks in a place it can seem quite quiet - once it fills a bit the atmosphere is friendly and relaxed.

The problem with this pub before was not the decor, but the staff. When they ignore you if it suits them, play their own music at the expese of atmosphere and genererally act like vile pre-madonnas, then you should really give the pub a miss- at least until they sack the staff.

The New Town Bar has recently undergone not a facelift, but a complete cosmetic (and personality) makeover. The interior is completely changed to be, in essence, a different bar.
Or is it? The staff are still as rude as ever, particularly the manager, so that sets the tone. And unfortunately, what the New Town had going for it was its atmosphere. And that is gone entirely.
The pub is now called "Twist" (or is it "Twits"?). Its lame IKEA-esque makeover leaves it with no personality whatsoever. Give it a miss...

Oh dear. Gay or not, there has to something that makes one go back to a bar. For me, customer service is important but not for the staff in this dive. If anyone barman should crack a smile, it's at each other or to ask what video they should put on next. They have no interest in their customers and lack basic human warmth. Someone even said to me that the staff in the Newtown bar are vile. In my limited experience of this bar, I have to agree. Do yourself a favour, if you find yourself wondering where to go for a drink in Edinburgh, go anywhere but no the Newtown bar. It's dreary, sad and that's just the staff. Now, imagine the clientel!!!!!

'Dark but not dingy' apparently by the pub's own description. I beg to differ.Staff surly and unhelpful but then it is a gay pub and gay men are supposed to expect that and in the absence of much choice...Try what else is on the scene.

Great Happy Hour (12pm-8pm) daily! Great music videos! Was really surprised when I stumbled upon this bar it seems "hidden" for a city centre pub. Yes it's a gay bar but if you are comfortable in your own skin then why shouldn't you enjoy a good bar regardless of wether it's gay or not.
