Agree somewhat with previous posters in that i prefered the old traditional feel the place had a few years ago. What with real ales on tap and the leather sofas etc. However the place was falling down round their ears and some major scale work needed done on the on it.
If like me your not keen on the downstairs no atmosphere, trendy sports bar go upstairs. its pretty tastefully decorated and has a far cosier feel to it.

i couldnt agree more with the previous poster. This used to be a lovely character filled pub full of all kinds of folk .
Now its been turned into a horrible sports themed gaff with shining metal , absolutely soulless and populated by the most annoying student/rich bruntsfield residents - sadly typical of the way auld reekie is going .

It amuses me that some people can credit the changes made to this bar. It previously would be home to a wide mix of the links residents of all persuasions. Entice people from across the city and welcome in the wandering tourist. The "sportster" bar image is ugly and was done to death a decade ago. It unfortunately attracts the student population who are clearly undergraduate for a reason. Nothing wrong with students ... I was one myself. When a young man or woman ... student or not ... spends their social nights talking about the success that their parents have yielded both in professional status and financial mass... you truly do despair. This pub is home to a huge number of oiks and ponces... It is a shame that such a well positioned pub has fallen prey to a disproportionate number of these less savoury creatures. If you want to hear someone talking as loudly as they can about another persons successes in life and feel they claim honourary adulation by association... this is the pub for you... if not ... go to bennets round the corner... the IQ is higher ... the people more genuine .... still a smattering of ponces ... but much less offensive.

shame on all of you that slate the golf. if it had not been done up to todays standards not only would it not be standing but no one would drink there in great enough numbers to keep a good pub open!!! If anyone is in any dought about how good a pub it is now then get down there on a 6 nations day and join the line of fans waiting to get in! Great pub well worth a look, main bar very good but for a really good time get up the stairs and relax.

My wife and i visited Edinburgh for the first time and had been recommended to visit Ye Olde Golf Tavern by friends back home in the states! Staff fantastic, Food was awesome and we even got to play a round of golf free of charge due to being in so often whilst we were in the city! If you get a chance its worth the visit! have read some of the more controversial reviews and couldnt disagree more! We will be back !!!

Seems like there are mixed opinions about the golfy!

I vote with my feet when it comes to pubs post re-fitted and I frequent the golf tavern far less since the change.

A collection of signed golf balls doesn't do it for me. It used to be a pub I would take visitors to Edinburgh because it had a bit of charm, character and local feel. Now there is no difference to the style bars in centre of town. It is darker, the central bar dominates and the space seems smaller.

It could have been done so much better - why did they not add the upstairs (as just now) but keep downstairs more in its original style? (best of both worlds)

The renovation on the Golf Tavern is simply a step into the millenium. It does not ridicule or ruin any of its history, its just a new chapter for the long standing drinking establishment.

The staff are friendly and efficient, the food is good and the collection of golf memorabilia is outstanding.

Had it been left in its previous state it may not have been standing for much longer. With its new design and steady stream of customers it now stands a good chance of being around for another 300 years!

Once one of the most civilised hostelries in the Edinburgh area, the interior has been revamped - complete with plasma football screens and chrome everywhere. A disaster.

This used to be one of my favourite pubs in Edinburgh, full of character, though admittedly in serious need of repairs. I was really looking forward to it reopening after the refurbishment. What a disappointment. It has been transformed into a soulless, characterless, modern hall of chrome-and mirrors. All the nooks and crannies that gave the place its personality have gone and been replaced by a large central bar in the middle of an empty room. We stayed for one drink, left and won't be back.

Why did they have to renovate this pub. Was a cracking boozer until Saltire Taverns got their hands on it and built a bar out of sheet meatal. The downstair bar must be the most uncomfortable I have ever been in. The upstair fairs better but just looks exactly the same as every other student friendly bar in the area. Poor poor poor.

Great food and a fine selection of beers etc.Unfortunately too much time is wasted 'checking-in'and out putters to people who are not there for a drink, but are merely hiring golfing equipment(yes i know it is the Golf Tavern !)Many times i have walked out when i would have stayed longer, due to bar staff(who are,on the whole, excellent)being monopolised,(due to the above) when i have been waiting for a pint !

the old golf tavern had been left to rot. By the time the people who have Frankenstien & Espionage took over it was in desperate need of a renovation. They spent a small fortune and put in the hours. However, they blew the gaff, they missed out on an excellent chance to celebrate one of Edinburghs' oldest drinking establishments. Instead they created a cheap clone of their existing brands. Truly a shame.

I really used to like the pub before it was modernised. It had good character and was a great place to spend an afternoon - this isn't quite the case now. It is no longer quite so welcoming. However, the staff were very efficient and there were plenty of them, so there was no delay or queues at the bar which is good. One slight plus side to the modernisation is more space being available

This is one of the oldest pubs in Edinburgh. Unfortunately its been done up recently and has been completely TRASHED. This is no longer a traditional and cosy boozer - instead we get a so called contemporary look and feel (stainless steel et al)...... this place could now be anywhere, it's a shame.
