All the negative comments I have seen on this website regarding the The Ensign Ewart are completely true!

As someone who has lived in Edinburgh for years, I can safely say that this is one of the un-friendliest pubs you will find. The last time we were in there, the staff seemed to resent the fact that we actually wanted to spend money in the place. After we got our drinks, we ended up leaving before finishing them, as there was a swarm of flies coming out of the "kitchen" area at the back, that kept diving into our drinks. Nice!

I used to drink there from time to time but gave up on the place. You are not made to feel welcome at all. They used to have a bar manager who was a fairly reasonable guy but the husband and wife team that run the place don't seem to like people very much especially if you fall into the following categories:

1. Don't spend a lot of money
2. Try to lean against the bar
3. Drink (seems odd for a pub)
4. Talk too loud
5. Swear (and I mean even mild words)
6. Ask too many questions
7. Want to use the toilet
8. Are not a tourist
9. Can't get a seat and need to stand

They even put a coded lock on the toilet door! I mean... A CODED LOCK!! Why would they do that?? by the smell of the loo I don't think they spend much money on cleaning products. The code is 1066 by the way. They couldn't even come up with a Scottish Date!

If the place changes hands give it a go but until then don't bother.

Having just discovered the Edinburgh Pub Guide, I started looking through all my favourite pubs. I couldn't believe it when I saw the rating here. I wouldn't say it's a regular haunt, but I've been many times and never had trouble with the staff, even when we were drunk and probably pissing them off. I guess it just depends on the luck of the draw.

I can't comment on the food, having never eaten there, but they've got tasty real ales, and a good pint of Guinness.

Jeez, I still can't believe it.

Wow, after reading the other reviews, I am really disapointed. It is truely embarassing too. If i had the power, i would fire all the staff and replace them with nice people. Then i would change the rules so that people would enjoy the pub. Ensign Charles Ewart is a Hero, not only that, he is my greatX? grandfather! Who is responsible for the lack of good heart in this Pub!! Because you are FIRED!!!!!!! DNA can likely proove that!! How can I take pride in a pub named after my ancestor, when nobody likes to go there. Shame on who is responsible for causing such poor ratings!! When i come to visit Ensign Ewart, I hope things have improved!!However i am still giving it good rating, only because of Ensign Ewart, not the pubs service.

Unless youre a tourist dont even bother going here , youre not welcome .
Expensive , tacky in the extreme and the manager was a complete spoon of the highest order .
Full of stupid petty rules designed keep people out - i mean god forbid someone should actually enjoy themselves in a .. boozer .
Considering its position its a complete embarressment .

This place was big on rules: step away from the bar when you are done ordering, have your pint and leave--even when the place is empty as it deserves to be, and there's a code for the bathroom (although there's nothing to dry your hands with once you do gain access). Plus, the staff was curt. Go down the street to the Jolly Judge, Deacon Brodie's, or one of the other countless pubs on the Royal Mile instead.

I can' believe the rudeness that I was greated with. The drinks were expensive (£3.20 stella, sounds pretty av. but this pub really doesn't have the panache) the service poor and the landladys attitude terrible! Even the barmaid working with her looked embarrassed! I can understand the locks on the toilet thing, but really...learn some customer service, management need to be trained!

It was winter time, and was snowing hard - we popped into the Ensign Ewart for something to warm us up. Upon arriving at the bar we were told to leave because one of us was wearing a hat (not a baseball cap). I have never come across such a terrible attitude in my entire life!

This was a really lovely old pub! Bar staff chatted to us and gave us a bit of the pub history. Staff also suggested other places we might want to go to in Edinburgh and we had a really great time. Our food was a good sized portion and came quickly...no complaints, except maybe a bit too expensive.

Went in here on our first night of a long weekend a couple of weeks ago. It was Friday night so expe cted it to be busy - but hey presto! only a few punters in. Our small party (6) quickly got served and the staff were very friendly and chatty.

Regulars very friendly - even taking the customary photos for us tourists and all in all it was a shame to leave really. Ok the decor was a bit tacky and it could do with a lick of paint maybe but I have to say I have been in worse places, honest.

ditto to all previous reviews. On my first trip to Edinburgh, I regretted not stopping in to what I thought would certainly be a fantastic traditional pub in the shadow of the Castle. On my second visit I did stop in for a pint and was very disappointed. First, should have had far more militaria for decor; second - the no standing by the bar rule is ridiculous...good thing there are lots of pubs nearby.

As a person born and bred in Edinburgh, I was appauled by this pub. I agree with Rod's earlier review and would add that the signs stating 'no tap water served' and 'do not stand by the bar' don't do much to welcome our visitors either. In response to my polite enquiry about the latter, I was told by the bar staff that, if I were a lady I wouldn't want to stand by the bar! Finally, the house white wine is as awful as anything I've tasted since the 1970s. What a shame that such a potentially wonderful pub choses not to take advantage of their captive market of visitors by offering a warmer welcome - it's an embarassment.

This pub is named after a Scottish soldier who catured the French flag at The Battle of Waterloo. It lies at the top of the Royal Mile and is the closest public house to Edinburgh Castle. As such, during high season, it is prone to frequent visits from slack bladdered American tourists who stay as long as it takes to relieve themselves. This is a shame as the pub, despite being on the small and dingy side has a lot of traditional character, cashing in on its location and name, although it could be argued that some of the memorabilia are a touch of the tacky side. The main gripe however, is that the licencee, in a fit of pique and extreme tight-fistedness, has put a combination code on the doors to the little boys' and girls' rooms to try and halt the influx of said incontinent and flabby tourists. This seems all well and good during the day, but when the castle closes and genuine punters come in a for a pint or 2, it seems a touch on the absurd side to have go to approach the bar and ask permission to have a piss..
