Yes there are poseurs in the bar - aren't there everywhere? But the atmosphere is always good, the door staff and the bar staff and friendly and polite (and very good at keeping out or getting rid of the most objectionable customers - possibly a reason for some of the poor reviews?). The beer is excellent and no more expensive than elsewhere central. I've been going to this place on and off for twenty years, never feel out of place, although most people in it are younger than me now. Go there.

Another edinburgh showing signs of decline . Overbearing and awkward doormen looking for an excuse to knock you back , and barstaff who think theyre more important than the customers . The draught beers here were good though but pricey .
Better coming during the day for a bite to eat and a game of pool . The clientele seem to betting younger though or maybe im just getting older !

I have enjoyed going to The City Cafe for over a decade and as a whole I have enjoyed the atmosphere and the food has always been great. However , on the night of feruary 19th 2007 I had an awful experience.
My friend was tyring to get a drink from an otherwise empty bar,Trying to get the barmans attention he was then scalded by the barman who said ..
"Can you not see I'm having a conversation ? You will wait until I am ready!"
Well I was gobsmacked , I have never experienced such awful cusmtomer care in my entire llife ! I think it was disgusting behaviour and I shall NEVER go back to The City Cafe until I can be sure that I will not recieve the same treatment as my friend did.

Great place to visit. Really good friendly staff and a great regulars crowd. Regarding the earlier comment about the seats/pool tables - its just been done up so definately worth a trip down. A really good place either for a chill over coffee or to take in DJ sets at night. Give it a go!

This is my preferred cafe bar right now, basically because I can get all the above in the one place, anytime I want. Its open all day, the coffee is more drinkable than most places in the city and I like the fish in the tanks, especially Damian the 14 year old eel.
Handy for early evening dating, plus a happy hour 5-8pm, with selected drinks £1.80 and bottles of wine at a six quid.
(I can even do informal music business meetings during the day here - how kewl is that.)
....and oh yeah - the staff are all cute as well!!
Its on my website anyway

Once, and never again. The legendary city cafe eh? Maybe years ago. Change fell out of my pocket and I lost it in holes in the seat covers. If you are a trend pretender this is the place. If you are in any way cool you'll be somewhere else. Skipping cds, broken pool tables, Disrepair all around, surly barstaff, ultra pretentious student "bench" wearers and unbelievably high prices. You like? Take the bouncers for face value, are you alright mate? Next time I listen to the wife.
