I have been in the Canny Man's a number of times and its the only place where the staff consistently rude. It has the potential to be so much more than the pretentious, stuck-up place it really is. The manageress is an unsmiling, unwelcoming dragon who stood over us as we finished our expensive drinks at closing time. Go to the Merlin across the road, forget the Canny Man's I wouldn't recommend it to anyone, and considering I've recently moved into the area, it has lost two potential regulars.

Have just been to Canny Man's for first time and it will defintely be the last. The food was poor to average in quality and rip off in terms of value. For all the hype, just a cold, very expensive sandwich. They couldn't provide tap water yet gave us a free glass of unwanted rose - typical I guess of arrogance in deciding what customers want. They don't take cards, and the system of ordering where customers have to write out their orders which staff then collect is just silly. Very disappointing and unfriendly to the point of laughability.

One of the only pubs in Edinburgh to have any class. The staff are well versed in the wines and whisky/whiskeys (yes they even have Irish whiskey) on offer and even have a humidor with a selection of Cohibas. A delightful establishment all of which harks back to an era long before bling bling! If you don't know much about wine or whisky and want to try an up market bar, I recommend you to ask for a mid 1990s Beaujolais nouveau at the bar to be assured of great service.

many people complain about the price of drinks in this place but at three pounds a pint it is still much cheaper than most places in town and on a par with monty's. at the canny man's you know what u are going to get. good service, good drinks and good food. without any nutters or drunks to spoil your experience

I went in for a drink as we made are way through morninsgide yet despite the abrupt service and looks that suggeted i was in a bar 'out of my league' i can see why the staff behave the way they do. I sat at the bar (after being told to move from my origonal seat) and was amazed to hear just how the staff spoke about the customers but if you scratch the surface you understand why. Not one customer said 'please' while one elderly lady barked her order despite their being an obvious queue. i would agree that this is not everyone's cup of tea but if i worked there i would be inclined to behave the same way. the customers are the real problem here.

I didn't find this place rude at all. In fact I found it quite the opposite. I was smartly dressed, polite, and got the same in return.
I get the impression the Canny Man's is deliberately alienating as customers the sort of people I and many others would cross the road to avoid.
I just wish the staff of the likes of the Cafe Royal and the Guildford Arms were a little "ruder" to some of the neds who sadly drop in looking for pints of crap cider from time to time.
Canny Man's is one of the last remaining pubs to maintain customer standards which have sadly disappeared since the 1980s.
And the range of malts etc is outstanding.

I'm totally disgusted with the staff that work on these premises. I put it down to lack of education on their part, no people skills whatsoever. As a result, I decided not to hang around too long so I made a sharp exit.

The only good thing that this pub has to offer is its seductive and enchanting interior. However, I must admit.... never, ever, have I come across such a bunch of impertinent, self-absorbed and undeniably arrogant bunch of folk.
An experience I'll never forget. It left a very bad taste in my mouth. A bit of advice to management and staff - treat others the way you would like to be treated yourself. Brush up on your interpersonal skill.

This is one of my favourite pubs in the UK. The ambience is amazing, the crowd is friendly. Bar staff are known to be rude although in the 20 or more times I have been, I've not encountered that. Wouldn't recommend it for food though. But, if you look around, hardly anybody does go there for food. I wouldn't want the dusting job though....lol

Never order food in this bar, it is well over priced and the portions are tiny. The service is also terrible. We ordered a starter and it was not until after the starter came that we eventually got our drinks. We would have been better off to go over to the bar and get it ourselves. A surf and turf consisted of a single slice of cold beef ,one prawn and a tiny peice of lobster. In fact the whole experience was so bad we were laughing by the end of it. It seems the bar staff agreed as we were given a free bottle of wine. A nice gesture but still felt totally ripped off by the price of the food. One to avoid.

I can't remember exactly the last time I was in this pub. It was a warm saturday and I was sat outside where we had lunch and watched buckets of ice being poured into a half barrel which contained a bottle of Champagne so large that no-one can ever remember the name of it. Young families passed by with the their kids and quietly ordered and emptied the odd botlle of Champagne served with fresh strawberries. Must have been around June or July! Later we moved back to the bar where my two Glaswegian friends mulled over their choices of single malts like two infants in a sweetie shop. We admired the wine list and discussed in full. We admired the standard of training of the staff ( something rarely seen in the UK even in the best of hotels.). Then we left having had one of those perfect saturdays that stay with you for a long time. £3.OO a pint some reviewer said? I didn't notice! It all seems relative to the quality of the experience. Pubs come and Pubs go. This one, last time I looked, was into it's third generation I believe. It's easy to understand why! I think I understand the less favourable reviews that the pub receives however: I was walking by the Paris Opera House not too long ago and I heard a distinct wee scottish accent comment "aye it's alright if yee like that sort'ae thing"! The Canny Man does a great job of discouraging the latter.

Interior - facinating
Beer - good but very pricy, though you do get a wee bowl of nibbles. Nice to go for a chat with friends who have not been before.
Customer care - can be very brash and if you dare to sit in the locals area, even when empty they are very rude.

this is the best pub in edinburgh. the food is fantastic with well over 100 item on offer at very reasonable prices, the whisky selection is second to none and the wine list has everything that you would want from good table wine to the top producers in the world.the service is friendly and efficient. it is not an establishment that suffers fools gladly so as long as you dont act like an ass they wont treat you like one.

But why bother? There are plenty of other public houses which serve good food with the added bonus of a smile and friendly banter.

People who aren't regulars tend to claim the bar staff and owners are hostile. I have only seen this happen when people come in and cause a problem. They provide a unique service that I think is worth paying for. The food is excellent and I always look forward to the lovely boozy sweets at the end! The have one of the best, if not THE best whiskey selection in Edinburgh and if something isn't good they won't lie and say its lovely! The wines are wonderful, you don't just have a choice of 'red or white' here. This would suit a whiskey drinker, wine drinker or just someone who likes a damn good pint.
